A series of short stories

Hi guys, I have written a series of short stories for you to read while having your LONG holidays.... hahaha.... Let me know what you think alright. Below is Part I.

An unforgettable day.

I clutched my handphone tightly. To send the SMS or not. I was unsure. I wanted so badly to send out the SMS. Yet, I did not dare to. Looking at the previous messages, I knew I had to do something, yet, I remained hesitant. What if the result wasn’t favorable? What if the answer was ‘no’? What would happen then? Lost and frustrated, I was totally lost and frustrated. Finally, I hit the ‘send’ button on the touch screen handphone.

The message must have gone through a million miles in cyberspace. The suspense was killing me. What would her answer be? I glanced at my handphone nervously. “What was taking her reply so long?” The ten minute wait seemed like an eternity. Millions of thoughts were running through my head like a bullet train running at 300 km/h. I was unable to compose myself. My mind kept toggling between the possibilities. Could I face the consequences? Would I be able to live with the reply?

She had caught my attention nearly three months ago. The radiant smile and soft voice captivated my heart. Even though we had only met rather recently, I felt that I had known her for the longest time. She never failed to cheer me up when I was down. That camp was where it all began. The place was littered with unfamiliar people and I was much too shy to talk to anyone when I noticed her also sitting quietly in the corner. My heart skipped a beat as she walked towards my direction. “Hi” she said, “You must be as lost as me.” I managed a weak nod and a little smile. It was, love at first sight. Months of text messages followed, and I found myself liking her more and more.

“Beep, Beep” rang my phone. It brought me crashing back to reality. Nervously, I hit the “read” button on my phone. I was shocked. It read,

“Hey, thanks for your message. Sure. I would love to go out. Saturday, 7pm at City Hall?”

I had got my first date.

-- End of Part I--

Take care,

Mr Goh.

History of the English language

The use of English language

The decision to adopt the English language as Singapore’s lingua franca back in 1965 was the right decision. Being a small nation state means that Singapore’s future is strongly linked towards that of the global economy. The ability to communicate with the rest of the world therefore, becomes absolutely crucial.

Although English has had a relatively short history compared to other languages, it is today, the world’s most widely spoken language. The United Nations lists six major working languages, namely, English, French, Spanish, Russian, Mandarin and Arabic. Of these languages, English is by far the most widely spoken language. This is due to the fact that English exists as the language of international business, science and modern innovation. From being the original language of the English rebels who were fighting against France, much knowledge today is expressed in English, and it has become widely accepted that to advance in the field of science and research, one has to be fluent in English.

English exists today

Breaking my light fitting...

Gosh, what a terrible day.

I broke my light fitting. Rah. Two nights ago, my bulb started flickering, and last night, it finally died. So i thought that i'd change it this afternoon. Now, goodness knows when was the last time i changed a light bulb, and for this particular light, i don't even remember ever changing it. Well, someone else probably did, considering that this light has been in my room since we moved in (that would have been 15 years ago?). I guess no light bulb ever lasts for 15 years? But anyway, i had to change it this time round.

The casing was kinda stiff so i gave it a tug. And a guy being a guy, i guess i used a bit too much brute force, yup, you can guess where this is going. As i take the casing away, one bit of the bracket mounting falls to the ground. Excellent. I thought it would still be OK considering that there were two more brackets which i can hook onto. Well, after replacing the bulb, i tried to push the casing back on. After some figuring out and trying various ways of putting the casing back on, yup, the second bracket fell to the floor to.

So, that's that for my light fitting. Its done. Haha.. Time for a new one....

Light shopping anyone?

Take care and stay safe,

First Crust

Tonight was the premiere of the new English drama serial, "First Class". To be honest, I was kind of looking forward to the show, as it was set in my previous teaching school. It was interesting to see Jade Seah and other actors walking around the school during the filming process. This, was about 2 months ago. Even though they were filming in school, I didn't really know much about the plot until i saw some snippets of the show being advertised on television. It didn't leave me impressed. However, I decided to give it a fair-go and watch it anyway. After all, being objective is what matters the most in this case. Yet, what i saw tonight, didn't leave me very impressed at all. In fact, i was rather disappointed. Its not that i cannot laugh at myself, but i felt that the show didn't really do justice to how much hard work teachers really put in for their students.

While i understand that the show is made for entertainment purposes, i felt that the show should also have attempted to inject a does of realism into the show. It is exactly this kind of show that sends out the wrong signals to students and the public over what a real school is like. Indeed, it seems to me that the show is more about the life of a zookeeper rather than that of a teacher. I think it would help if i went in-depth into a few particular characters to analyze why the show didn't quite make the cut in my opinion.

Firstly, the show trivialized the role of individual characters in the school. Take the example of the vice-principal, played by Nicholas Lee. He plays an extremely insecure VP. And the way he acts it seems as if he is a control freak who is extremely ineffective. In real life, VPs never ever 'arrow' work to teachers on the spot nor do they put down their staff in public. That, is unprofessional.

Secondly, the show also made rather broad stereotypes. For example, the effeminate home economics teacher. While i've got nothing against effeminate teachers, i felt that it was unfair to stereotype male and home economics teachers as being effeminate. There are many male home economics teachers who are really masculine. I won't even begin to talk about the discipline master.

I really felt that the show could have done more to project a perhaps more accurate picture of what the school environment is really like. We don't exclude pupils, in fact, as far as possible, we try to be supportive of them. But when they are insolent, then, its discipline that's required. As teachers, we really try our best for our students, and we're concerned about their future, and not just our own future. Of course, we are also concerned for our own careers, to be realistic. But, i hardly doubt its to that extent as portrayed in the show.

Well, i just hope that the subsequent episodes will be better.

Remember students, this is a show and not real life. In real life, if you behave like one of these actors, you will be dealt with. Seriously.

Enough ranting.

Unfit..

I ran 2.4km today. Its been awhile since i last ran a real 2.4km on a proper track with proper timing. In fact, its been almost a year since i last took my IPPT. And today's results were less than satisfying, in fact, it was dismal. I clocked a total of 11 minutes and 50 seconds. Not good at all. My last timing was 10 minutes and 20 seconds. In other words, i am running too slowly.

For those of you that don't know, i am supposed to be the team captain for the NIE director's relay. Basically, its a group of 4 guys and 2 girls (6 in total) each running 2.4km in the fastest time possible in order to win $300. The task looks daunting considering that we have only about three weeks left to train. I'm not sure about the rest, but i hope they're faster than me. I'm starting off on a really lousy note. I guess there's much more room for improvement.... Time for the daily running sessions again... No more slacking....

Sighz. Time to get my fitness back...

On a separate note, i bought a new CD from Hillsong. Its entitled 'This is our God', and its absolutely fabulous. I'm definitely enjoying these songs. With previous Hillsong CDs, its taken me awhile to like the music. But with this one, its different. The songs really captivated me from the first time... A definite buy if you're Christian...

As one chapter closes, another opens

Today marked exactly 4 months since i was posted to this school. So much as changed in four months. There have been ups and there have been downs, but i have had the time of my life, and i definitely wouldn't trade this experience for anything else. In a sense, i've come one full circle. I began my solo teaching career in 2N3, hence, i guess its apt that i end it in 2N3 as well.

Even as i look at all the well-wishes wish they wrote, I feel a real sense of achievement. I became a teacher because i wanted to make a difference in someone's life. But the truth is, these students really made a difference in my life. I guess its a two-way process. We learn from each other. I have been so blessed to have been a part of this class and this school.

As one chapter closes, another one opens. Yes, its only been 4 months, but it feels as if i've know this class for so long. Hence, parting is difficult. But at the same time, i'm going off to study, i'm going to be an even more effective teacher.

Thank you, 2N3

Photos!

The class even bought me a cake! Wow! Thanks Larry. You did a great job!

That's me playing with the soft toy one of my students gave me. I'm a huge fun of 'Twas the night before Christmas'. I wonder how they knew that... anyway... see the matching shirt? Thanks Jacqueline.

Thanks to 1E2. They really touched my heart. I was stunned when i walked into the class yesterday. For a brief moment, i didn't know how to react.

Thanks all my Sec 1s. You guys are terrific.

Of awesome students with terrific hearts

To be completely honest, when i first received my posting order to Bendemeer Secondary School, i was somewhat stunned. I wasn't expecting to go to a secondary school as i was told that i would be put for Junior College. But as things would turn out, there was no mistake about my posting and God had it all planned out from the beginning.

I have learnt so much in this school and i would not trade it for anything else. The students that i have come into contact with have just been so awesome that i am left speechless. Well, i was left almost in tears today. They really touched my heart. I kinda knew about the farewell party for me beforehand, but i definitely wasn't prepared for what was to happen in the classroom. As i walked in, the class was dark and i was really surprised when i was presented with a sheet of well-wishers from everyone in the class. It really touched me. (I'm going to be framing this up and i will put it on my wall in my room at home as a reminder to myself of what a privilege it is to have taught such a class. It will almost remind me of why i became a teacher) I am truly so blessed.

As i read some of the cards, i can feel tears welling up in my eyes already. Gosh, i'm gonna miss these students so bad. Sometimes, i teach and i wonder if any learning had taken place at all. Yesh, sometimes i get frustrated as well, but at the end of this, i look back and i realize how lovely students are at heart. I am glad. :) It is this sort of stuff that will take a person very far in life. Be nice and people will be nice to you.

I don't know how i'm gonna handle tomorrow. I don't want to know. To a certain extent, i don't really want to leave this school, but at the same time, i want to go off and study to improve my teaching methods. These students, deserve only the best from me. Hence, i've gotta give them my best.

I won't disappoint you class. I'm gonna study hard and do really well.

Take care and stay safe (yes Camy)

The Night Safari

Hmm.. seems like its been awhile since I last updated... So much has been happening and i've been either too tired or too busy to blog.

I had the chance to visit the Night Safari last Saturday with a group of friends from New Zealand. Believe it or not, this was my first time going to the night safari despite being a Singaporean and living in Singapore. I've been to many places around the world, but i've never even been to my own local tourist attraction despite living here. It was rather ironical, so, when the chance came up for me to visit the place, i didn't refuse. I'm glad i didn't, cos' it turned out pretty well. However, for $32, i must admit that it was a tad too expensive. I guess that's the 'tourist tax'. I guess the night safari is one of those place where you visit once, and you'd probably never go back again. Its a good place for tourists, but as a local, i guess once is enough.

On a separate note, its my final week in school. Gosh, i'll so miss this place and the students here. Its with mixed feelings really. On the one hand, i'm excited about going back to study and for my career to move on. On the other hand, i'm gonna miss this place... Ah well, everything is for a time and a season. Its learning to enjoy whatever season you're in that will result in a much happier person.

Stay cool.

Red Cliff

I managed to catch 'Red Cliff' today. My first movie in more than a month. And, it was a terrific show. I appreciated the cinematography and the character development, I thought it was very well directed. It was relatively emotional as well to see how Sun Quan's army had devoted itself as a brotherhood to the service of the common people. Somehow, Liu Bei was made to look like a complete loser and weakling compared to Cao Cao and Sun Quan.

The show was also very touching with many poignant moments. I nearly cried during two particular scenes. The first was when Zhao Yun bowed down before Liu Bei to apologize for the fact that he did not manage to save his wife, all this after he had fought like crazy to save the baby. The second part was when General Gan Xin bowed down before the old man to apologize for one of his troops stealing a water buffalo. Wow. These were soldiers that fought with a real heart.

The focus wasn't so much so on Liu Bei and his generals, Guan Yu, Zhang Fei and Zhao Yun. Of course, they all had roles to play and did acted really well in the battle scenes. But, they were just the supporting crew. The show revolved mainly around Zhuge Liang and Zhou Yu. Their acting was superb.

There was only one twist at the end of the show which i totally disliked... the phrase, 'to be continued.....' Rah. Why? Why? Why? It was turning out to be such an awesome show...

Nonetheless, i'll just wait for the next part...

Take care and have a great weekend.

National Songs

So... here i am, listening to National Day Songs getting in the mood for National Day. Yesh, its just 30 days away now. Gosh, i can't believe its another national day already.

When Singapore had its first national day, it wasn't a pleasant experience. It was, in one word, unexpected. We weren't ready for independence, nor were we expecting it. Sure, we had some hiccups in our relationship with Malaysia, but certainly not one that we expected a separation to happen. The announcement came on national TV with the then prime minister, Mr Lee Kuan Yew making an incredibly sad announcement that Singapore was now on its own. This, was 43 years ago. Today, many Singaporeans celebrate this day without a sense of history. For many, its just a public holiday to enjoy, they do not realize the process of nation-building that has taken place so far. The fact that Singapore is able to survive 43 years is nothing short of a miracle. Sure, excellent foresight and planning must take some credit, but ultimately, i believe if not for God's favor, we would not be where we are today.

Thinking back, i have been involved in a total of NDPs. Yesh. Two parades. The first was in 1999 and the second was in 2007.  In 1999, i was involved in the combined schools choir that performed at the national stadium with Evelyn Tan as the key singer who sang "Together we make a difference". Last year, i was part of the medical support team for NDP07, this theme song was sung by Kit Chan who sang "There's no place i'd rather be'. The fireworks get better each year. But put it this way, i've never really enjoying performing in NDP. Its weeks and weeks of practice.... you get to school/work on Monday dead tired, and you don't get time off. Sure, its fun to watch, but its not that fun when you consider all the work you put in. My heart goes out to all the performers each year.

This time last year, i was out at the floating platform managing casualties and making sure that everyone is well and hydrated. It was hard work. We had to wake up at 4am to grab our medical supplies from camp, and then we had to arrive at the platform by 7 and be ready to recieve any potential casualties by 8am. We didn't leave the place till almost midnight every session. And this happened for 12 consecutive Saturdays. Definitely not pleasant. But, take it as part of National Service...

This year, i still have no idea what i'll be doing on national day. All i know is, i'm certainly not at the floating platform!

So You Think You Can Dance

I was just watching "So you think you can dance" on television, and the performances really blew me away. I am a real fan of the show even though i can't dance. You could pay me a million bucks to dance, but i can't. I couldn't dance even if my life depended on it. I have two left feet and am super clumsy. But wow, the performances were terrific. I throughly enjoyed it.

Watching these shows make me realize how the human body is capable of so many flexible movements. All their moves are so cool, so technically challenging, which makes it even nicer to watch.

I must learn to dance one day...

Occupational Hazards

I'm rather annoyed at the moment.

I look at the stain on my shirt, and i'm thinking 'rah. this is annoying'. Guess what? I was talking with the whiteboard marker in my hand. I forgot to put the lid back on and the marker slipped out of my hand and landed on my orange shirt. This is the first time i'm wearing this shirt and it was expensive stuff, rah. Now, there is a green streak on the shirt. It completely wrecks the nice orange shirt that i began the day with. Too bad for me, i guess. Its time to buy a new shirt, i reckon... Alternatively, i could always add more green streaks to the shirt to make it look like it was part of the design... Hmm... I guess that's an option.

Gosh. Its friday. Finally. Its been a really long first week back. But Frrridayyyy is finally here and i'm glad... I get to catch my breath. Well, not really, i have a 10km run tomorrow morning along with a whole host of church activities in the afternoon. I'm in for another packed weekend. Singapore life. Its always one activity after another....

Enjoy the weekend... but remember to do your homework..

What motivates you?

I had a really fun time in class today. It was a super long day for me, and I just fell into the sofa in the staff room at the end of the day. Dead tired. It was hectic, but fun. I was discussing the morals of 'Kungfu Panda' in class, and it was quite remarkable. The master shifu discovered what motivated Po and used that to train him. In this case, it was food. Indeed, the master shifu learnt to speak the language of his student and was able to connect with him on that level, now that is what i call a superb teacher. There was no secret to Po's success and skills other than himself.

All of us have at least one thing that motivates us. For some people, it is good grades, for some, it is an overseas holiday, for some, it is money. Let's face it, we're all people, and we need things to motivate us. For me, what motivates me is when i see my students do well. Nothing brings more satisfaction to my heart than to see my students putting in their best effort and doing well. But ultimately, the effort must come from you personally.

Thinking back, I wasn't a very good student last time either. I didn't really put in much effort to study until I was sent overseas - that was when i realized how important my studies were. From there on, I made an entirely fresh new start and decided to work hard. Thankfully, I had a chance to redeem myself and start afresh.

Don't waste your life, give it your best shot, and live with no regrets.

Term 3, Day 1

Holidays are over. The past four weeks just zipped by just like that. Where did all that time go? I was so busy the entire time that i hardly had any time to rest. There wasn't a single day during the holidays where i was able to stay home and relax. I was on my feet all day, everyday. Not sustainable.... Its only term 3, day 1, yet, i feel so tired already. The effects of a lack of sleep is beginning to take its toll on me. Gosh. How am i gonna survive??? I guess not surviving is not an option. I just have to keep smiling and keep telling myself that i can do this.

I watched kungfu panda yesterday. Kinda cheesy, i felt. But i liked the values it was promoting. How one should never give up, and the secret really is 'nothing'. Its you. You are the secret. Don't look to others for help, because you are the secret to success. I enjoyed the show also because it promoted respect for your kungfu master (teacher), indeed, i believe the mouse teacher saw alot of potential in Po, and believed in him later on in the show. Hence, he was able to train Po well. If he did not believe in Po, he would have given up on him a long time ago.

I need to realize the potential of each student.... that's what the show taught me. Awesome values...

Movie Review

Hi 2N3,

Just a reminder to do your holiday homework. I'll give you guys a sample of a movie review today, and i'll give you guys a sample of the reader's digest review sometime next week. Do check back here for details.

Movie Review - Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull

Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull is the fourth movie in the Indiana Jones Series. After nearly a twenty year absence, Indiana is back with Harrison Ford still as energetic as ever. I particularly enjoyed the movie as it invoked feelings of nostalgia as I grew up watching Indiana Jones. Indeed, Indiana Jones was the very movie that inspired me to read up more about ancient civilizations. The adventure mixed in together with the knowledge of Indiana is truly amazing. The movie is good clean fun.

I liked the movie as it promoted very good values. These values include the importance of studying, staying in school, helping your friends, keeping your word. I especially like it because it downplays love. Too many movies these days emphasize love. Love, is over-rated. Nonetheless, my favorite quote from the movie is this, 'I guess the treasure is not gold, its knowledge.' As a teacher, this resonates with me. But in the end, all the gold is destroyed, but the only thing remains is this, that we are wiser.

My favorite character is Indiana Jones played by Harrison Ford. He put up a stirling performance despite his age. He still has the charm and charisma that is needed for the role of Indiana Jones. Smart, yet adventurous and athletic. I throughly enjoyed the performance and I truly recommend it to anyone who wants to watch a good movie.

OK... that's all for now.

Reflections...

School holidays, and finally sometime for reflection. This is where I start getting philosophical about life. I feel that the word 'reflection' has been massively overused. Reflection, more than anything else, is like a rear-view mirror when you're driving. You look at it periodically to see what has happened and what's behind you. You don't drive looking at your rear view mirror all the time - you only look in the past to understand how and why you got to be as such.

I've been teaching in this school for the past ten weeks. There's been ups and downs, but in general, i think i can safely conclude that there's been more ups than downs. I guess you take what you got and make the best use of it. Don't keep hoping for something you don't have and then get disappointed when you don't get it. Don't get me wrong, please have targets and goals. Those of you who know me well enough will know that I am a very goal-oriented person. I like to see myself achieving things. There's a saying which goes, 'he who aims at nothing is sure to hit it.' I can't agree with. Aim for nothing, and you will get nothing. Aim high, and work towards that aim.

I was thinking about my university days and how much I missed them. I was thinking about my friends in university and how much fun we had together. I met my best friend in university. I learnt to ski. I learnt to study on my own. I learnt how to cook. And there are so many more things I learnt in university, both in and out of the classroom. It was fantastic. Those were good times. I remember in university, I used to take one module that I hated every semester. The only reason for that was so I could complain about it. Weird. I'm weird.

I never really imagined myself as a teacher while I was going through university. I thought i was going to be working in some other government department. Well, technically, MOE is a government department. But, I was looking more towards something like foreign affairs or home affairs. But having been in Bendemeer for ten weeks, I have no regrets taking up teaching..

Will post more stuff up tomorrow.

Last year's O Level Combined Humanities Answers

Model Answer Key

GCE O Level Exam 2007

Combined Humanities

1(a) Source A shows the uneasy relationship between India and Pakistan over their respective nuclear programs. The picture shows both players hard in concentration as they wait for the other party to move. Any false move could result in a nuclear war. The intent of this cartoon is likely to show the tense relationship between India and Pakistan due to the nuclear tests.

The cartoonist likens the relationship between India and Pakistan to a game of chess. Their moves are highly dependent on the other party’s moves. With each move of a chess piece, it is tantamount of launching a nuclear missile. The chess game also represents the strategy that each party is undertaking to counter the other.

1(b) Source B is not very useful as evidence about reactions to Indian nuclear test. While Source B shows that the particular individual is very proud of India’s nuclear position, the other sources show how the nuclear tests are negative to Indian security in the long run. Source B tells me that “I am sure that every Indian is proud at the moment.” However, this view is not supported by every Indian, as Source C shows how the tests will heighten tension in between India and Pakistan, and might even lead to an arms race very quickly. Indeed, Source C tells me that “the test will worsen the tension in the South Asian region, triggering a nuclear arms race.”

It would appear that the purpose of Source B is useful as it increases the nationalistic fervor among Indians to make them feel extremely proud and well-protected from external threats. Indeed, being able to join the nuclear club puts India a cut above the rest and the article serves to play up this sentiment. As Source B says “We are going to be world players.”

1(c) The Indian Scientists in Source C would have to a rather large extent, though not entirely, agreed with Pakistani President Nawaz Sharif. Both sources agree on the fact that the tests would heighten tensions in the region. As Source C shows, “The tests will worsen tension in the South Asian region, triggering a nuclear arms race.”, and source D shows “India’s tests added to the already tense environment in South Asia.”

Both sources agree that the initial nuclear tests conducted by India was not entirely necessary as there was no real threat to India’s security. Indeed, as Source C shows, “there is no immediate threat to our nuclear security.”, and Source D shows that “India was motivated only by a desire for power.”

Sources C and D are different in the sense that the scientists and President Sharif disagreed in their views over having nuclear weapons. As Source C shows, “Can we really feel happy and secure in a world in which every country feels proud of its nuclear weapons and believes that they are necessary as deterrence. Whereas, Source D shows “nuclear deterrence is a vital part of our (Pakistan) security policy.”

1(d) Source E does not prove that all Indians are supportive of the testing of nuclear weapons. Source E shows a person holding u a sign which reads “No Water, No Electricity, No Jobs, No Problem. We have the Bomb”. Based on Source C, which says “people’s needs in terms of education and health are more urgent.”, it is rather obvious that the picture is one of sarcasm towards the Indian government.

I think Source E must be taken with a pinch of salt and not literally as it is sending a political message to the Indian government that without water, electricity and jobs, it is pointless having the bomb in the first place. Hence, the picture is saying that rather than spending money in research on the bomb, it is far more worthwhile to ensure that the standard of living is met and there is sufficient employment. This is the best way to ensure security.

Meeting up with ex-classmates

I had a very interesting today. Its been ten years since i left secondary school and i had a rare opportunity to meet up with some of my classmates from ten years ago. Indeed, I have not seen this group of people for the past decade. Unfortunately, it was under less than pleasant circumstances. One of my ex-classmate's mother had passed away over the weekend and we met up to offer our condolences. Yes, it was nice meeting up with everyone again, but it was at a not-so-nice place. A pity, but also a promise to meet up under better circumstances. I did not recognize a single face when we first met. Gosh - that's how much we all changed.

It was really funny when we started discussing secondary school life. How we used to make fun of our teachers, and cause lots of trouble. We could even recall so many specific events that happened which weren't so funny at that time. But looking back, it was terrifically entertaining.  Hindsight also gives 20/20 vision. So yah, i laughed until my cheekbones hurt. But it was all good fun. Throughly enjoyable.

I really hope that ten years from now, my students will meet up and have a good laugh over their school days... I think that would be awesome...

My brother the lawyer

I had a rather interesting experience today. Once in a lifetime, i would probably say. These kind of things don't happen everyday and since I have only one brother, i'm pretty sure that this will the first and last time that i will be able to witness such a ceremony. Today, I witnessed my brother being called up to the bar. With this, he is now a full fledged lawyer and can start handling cases on his own. It also means longer working hours and more responsibility to shoulder. I'm really happy for him... :)

Pedra Branca

Its the holidays... June holidays... I hope you guys are studying. Yah right, as if. You can't smoke me. I was a student once upon a time too. Study versus play. Please, its a no-brainer, I already know which choice you're going to pick. No prizes for guessing which one. But please, don't forget your holiday homework.

The ruling on Pedra Branca was released by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) today. Yes, Singapore won sovereignty over the lighthouse and the little island it sits on. But it lost the middle rocks. After months of waiting, finally, the verdict is out. Does this complicate or simplify matters? Well, both really. Yes, now we know who controls which part for sure, but by calling a 50-50, matters will still be complicated. Not unlike the times before the verdict was released. How Singapore negotiates with Malaysia over the use of territorial waters will be an interesting debate. Life is like that too sometimes. You can't expect to win all the time, but you really shouldn't be losing all the time either. Not studying is tantamount to losing, because you are not giving yourself a fair chance at life.

Miss Kam left the school today. It was kinda emotional for all of us. She has been such an inspiration to all of us, that her departure feels like a certain gap all of a sudden. While we always knew that this day will come, the fact that reality set in really caught us all off guard - especially for Miss Kam. Over the past 13 years, she has played such a vital role in the life of the school and she has really given so much that its really so hard to let go. Then again, everything in life is for a time and a season. There is a time when you are a student, and there is a time when you go out to work. There is also a time to retire and a time to have fun. Knowing which season you're in and making the best use of it would be the ideal situation to be in. All the best Miss Kam! I'm sure you'll do exceedingly well in the rest of your teaching career.

Having said so much, its going to be a super packed June holidays for me. Seems like there's something on every week...

I will still be contactable during the holidays if you need me. You can send me an e-mail if you really need to. My e-mail is theteacherisin@gmail.com

So tired...

Had another round of kayaking today. Gosh, kayaking is tiring business. Especially when you kayak on your own and you have to launch kayaks out too. At the same time though, I must say that its a really fun experience. I've never really been an outdoor adventure sports person until very recently. And come to think about it, I think i like it more and more. I must try some extreme sports like base-jumping and skydiving. Check out more about base jumping:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BASE_jumping

It looks really fun.

Anyway, enough about outdoor adventure stuff. The Pedra Branca verdict will be out tomorrow. Finally, after 29 years of quarreling with Malaysia over a rock, the final answer and decision will be announced by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) at the Hague, Netherlands. Let's hope it rules in Singapore's favor.

I've always been a fan of this thing called the "Model United Nations (MUN)". I used to do it alot while i was in secondary school and university in New Zealand. Of course, the arguments got more complicated as we got through university. Basically, the idea revolves around the fact that either an individual or a team of people form up to represent one particular country. It simulates the United Nations General Assembly Session where we try to pass laws and legislations for the world. So effectively, each person is representing a country and would try to fight for their country's best interest when they are arguing about how to frame the policy. Its alot of fun, and its something I would like to try out in Singapore soon... I don't know how its gonna turn out, but it'll be fun. Its tough to conduct because students need to research on that particular country and how that country views certain issues. They also have to be fairly articulate in trying to drive home their point.

Wow..its already the final week of term tomorrow. Half-a-year gone already. Gosh. Time flies. I'm looking forward to the holidays.... :)

Post-Exam Activites

I had the honor of bringing the Sec 1Ns and 1Ts kayaking and dragon boating today.

Initially, three teachers were supposed to go down into the water together. But in the end, two teachers baled out on me and I was left alone in the water. Rah. Haha.. But nonetheless, it was alot of fun, despite the fact that I didn't get a chance to kayak myself. But... seeing the Sec 1s have a go at paddling, I thought it was really worthwhile. If you know me long enough, i'm quite a thrill-seeker, I do lots of things just for the fun of it.

Tomorrow is bowling. Another sport which I really enjoy...

I think I should wear contact lenses to school more often from now on...

I'm still alive

Hmmm.. Its been awhile since I last blogged. Almost like a student again, don't blog during exam time. Yes, while the students were busy doing their exams, I was busy marking them. Indeed, I realized that since they put in effort to study and give their best shot, I had to mark it with the same level of enthusiasm and commitment to pass as many students as possible. So much has happened in the past three weeks that I really don't know where to begin.

OK.. Maybe let's start with last Saturday's funfair in school. Up till now, i still don't understand why its called 'funfair', when its not really 'fun', nor is it really 'fair'. Let me give you an example. I was physically man-handled (grabbed) by three students from a certain class to a certain stall to buy their stuff. I mean how much more unfair can you get than that??? And the best part, they were indignant about it. Ah well, all good fun, i guess. (Oh wait, maybe there's 'fun' in a 'funfair' after all).

Life as a single is awesome. I don't understand why people rush to get a 'stead'. Its over-rated. Over the past week, I saw Ironman and Drillbit Taylor. Very different plots, but I think i enjoyed Ironman better - maybe because it involved ethics, morals and a political undertone. Drillbit Taylor was about dealing with a school bully and how violence is the answer to the school bully. WRONG! I totally disagree with violence as an option to solve school bullying. There will be many people that disagree with me. I believe that the monopoly on violence in school lies with the teacher, discipline master, etc - not with the student.

Its the final week of school and its all post-exam activities. I must say, the calendar of activities is really rather packed. I have so many things on that I'm practically out of school everyday. Its gonna be really fun. Really looking forward to it.

Ah, holidays are coming. And there are so MANY books that i'm really keen to read. I'm tempted to spend a few days in a bookstore just reading book after book. Sounds like a plan...

Tired but pleased

Ah, its Thursday. One more day to the weekend. I need a break - so very tired. I have not had a weekend to rest in a very long time. I don't even remember the last time I had a sleep-in. Hmm.. maybe about 3 months ago? I seriously need a nice long rest - I hope this weekend is finally the time.

I was marking 2N3's vocabulary test paper this afternoon, and I must say that I am absolutely delighted with the test results. I was looking at the previous test scores and I realized that the class has made a dramatic improvement in their results - I am pleased. It simply goes to show that when they put in effort, they can do really well. :) I know I promised the class a treat if everyone passed their test, and I know that everyone really tried their best. However, there were still two students who did not pass the test...

We'll see how things go tomorrow. I need a break.

I'm really saddened

Many of you know that I studied in New Zealand. Not many of you however, know that I am Christian. Well, I am Christian, and proud of it. Its who I am.

I really saddened as i read the New Zealand newspaper. (http://www.nzherald.co.nz) A group of seven people from my church's college have passed away as a result of a canoeing expedition gone wrong. A total of six students and one teacher did not make it back home safely. Even though I did not know the people involved personally, it is still heart-wrenching as these people were from my church and they were all so young. Tragedy.

Now is not the time to start pointing fingers and portion blame. Rather, it is the time to reflect.

I'm saddened.

Answers to the History Test

To all the 2E History students

I know that I said that I will post up the answers to the history test tonight. I made this statement on the proviso that everyone will make it for the re-test this afternoon. I was left sorely disappointed. There are still a handful of people that have yet to take the test, and I'm not pleased about it because these people did not even have the courtesy to tell me beforehand - they simply choose not to show up. As such, I will not be able to return the papers this week, nor will I be able to post the answers online.

I apologize for this.

Being approachable

Learning is a lifelong process. Everyday, you're climbing up the learning curve. In your younger days, the learning curve will be steeper as you try to master all the skills to learn more stuff as you grow older. Once you reach a certain point, the learning curve becomes less steep and becomes more gradual as you acquire information bit by bit. But moral of the story is this, that one must never stop learning. Everyday, should be a learning process. Even as I walk into the classroom, I am learning too. So, it all begins with the right attitude - mostly important attitude is that you need to be hungry to learn more stuff.

Dear Mr Policeman

When I was in Primary School, we studied a series entitled 'Dear Mr Policeman'. Basically, it thought us things like how we should never follow a stranger, open the door to a stranger, etc. Kinda like how to protect ourselves. As Primary School students, it also gave us a little glimpse of talking to a policeman. I never thought too much of it until today..
For the second time in my life, I called the Police. It was the first time i called the police in Singapore. The first was when i was in New Zealand and I witnessed a poor Chinese female student get robbed by a person who jumped into a car immediately after grabbing her bag. The poor girl tried to hold onto her bag but she was dragged across the road. She was holding onto so tightly that the bag strap snapped and she was left lying on the road holding the strap. I witnessed the entire thing. So, that was my first time calling the police.
Tonight, I called the Singaporean police for the first time.

To: Mr Policeman
From: Mr Samuel Goh
Date: 12/4/08

It was 10.10pm and I took the MRT train from City Hall Station to Dhoby Ghaut Station. I was intending to change trains at Dhoby Ghaut to the North-East Line. The train was quite crowded, but there was certainly enough space for everyone on the train. Although it was only standing room, it was comfortable enough. I expected a routine trip and did not expect anything extraordinary to happen.

As the train arrived at Dhoby Ghaut, there was a loud 'bang'. Puzzled by what caused the sound, I turned to look and was most surprised to see a man being assaulted. His face had been smashed again the glass window by the side of the train doors. He continued to be beaten in the face even as he asked 'what happened?'. There was also a handphone lying on the floor of the train.

The assailant was a Malay Male in his mid-twenties of about 1.6m in height. He was wearing a red shirt t-shirt which read 'PSYH ED. 1981'. He was also wearing a pair of navy blue bermudas with slippers. There was also a large scar on his forehead just above the bridge of his nose. His hair, obviously gelled up, was short and spiky. There was also a Malay female with him. She was wearing a floral top and a pair of dark blue jeans. She was also carrying an "MNG" paper bag.

The victim was probably an Indian national as he did not speak with a local accent. He was obviously too stunned to react considering that the assailant had the element of surprise and continued to rain down punches on his poor victim. His girlfriend did not stop him from attacking the victim.

The assailant got off the train after attacking the victim and headed for the North-East Line towards Punggol. I followed the assailant. However, I had to depart as I had reached my station before he departed, hence, I was unable to follow him. Upon reaching the station control, I informed the station master of the assault. However, to my dismay, he was extremely unhelpful. All he could manage was 'with these sort of things, there is nothing we can do about it.' I was disappointed and replied with a 'so, are you going to leave things as it is?' He replied with a 'Yes'.

At this point, I decided to inform the police by dialing '999'. I reported this incident as I could not let the matter rest. Justice had to be served. I was assured by the police that they would try to arrest this person.

I would like to suggest that this assailant be dealt with in a most firm manner as we should not tolerate violence in Singapore. Irregardless of what the victim had done to him or his partner, there is no reason to resort to violence. Hence, I would like to suggest that he be imprisoned for no less than one month and be made to attend courses on anger management to better manage his anger.

Dear 2N3,
The above is a true story which happened tonight. See, I told you that report writing has a purpose. I've merely written the incident as a report. I have already sent this to the police.... See you guys on Monday.

Report Writing Format

Hey 2N3,

I must remind you of the report writing format...

1. To?
2. From?
3. Date...

Paragraph 1 outlines what happened and when it happened.

Paragraph 2 to 4 outlines gives more detail over the incident. Remember, please start a new paragraph for every new idea.

Paragraph 5 is for you to give your suggestions and opinions..

Please remember your paragraphing, and there is no need to sign off. Just leave it as it is...

It wasn't that bad...

Hey 2N3,

I've just finished marking your Vocab Quiz 2 and believe me, it wasn't really that bad. There were much higher marks this time as compared to Quiz 1. So, that's really good.

In general, most people improved from the last time, and i'm quite pleased about that too...

However, there was also a group of people who did not do as well as they did in the first quiz. This, was somewhat disappointing.

For those that did well, I know that you really put in the effort. I was really proud of a few of you today when I saw that you had really done your research in finding the meanings of those words. Today, you were rewarded. Those of you that did the work, saw a dramatic improvement in your grades. I can tell who studied and who did not.

On the whole, I am quite satisfied with these results, but I think it could still be better.

My aim for the next quiz is that everyone will pass...

Good luck for the Report Writing Test tomorrow...

Getting hurt and Having High Hopes

I injured both my knees in Bintan over the weekend. Was tempted to take MC. My knees hurt like crazy and yet I still had to go to school today. Yes, i did limp a bit, but in general, I was able to manage. More or less, anyway. There's too much stuff to cover, and I can't afford for my students to miss out on certain lessons. Its less than a month to exams now, and i've still got some stuff to cover. I'm determined that my class would be the best among all the N(A) classes.

Anyway, i feel kind of sorry for my class. Maybe i'm pushing them a bit too hard. But really, my hopes for them are high. It would be a real pity if any student is unable to reach his full potential. There's so much that i need to cover with them this week - this includes a test on Thursday and a test on Friday. I must admit, its tough being a student these days.

I hope my class does really well during the upcoming mid-year exams.

It wasn't that BAD...

Hey 2N3,

I've just finished marking the vocabulary quiz which you guys did earlier today. I know it was kind of a surprise, but really, you guys should have guessed it knowing that I was going to be away on thursday and friday. Nonetheless, it wasn't done that badly. In fact, it was quite OK. I will talk more about it in class when I see you guys on Monday again.

Meanwhile, please remember to do your journaling again... We're looking at the March issue of Reader's Digest pg 25 - 27 "A friend interrupted".

OK.. that's all for me now...

So, below are the work that I have asked the relief teacher to pass to you.

Thursday
Oral Practice

Friday
Comprehension on the assassination of Ghandi.

We'll go through these things again when i get back on Monday...

Enjoy the weekend in advance.

Choices

Life is about choices. Whether you make the right or the wrong decisions, you still have a choice. You can choose to react to certain things, or you can choose to let it slide. Indeed, an old teacher used to tell me 'you can choose your actions, but you cannot choose your consequences.' And she repeated herself just about every day. It was nagging at that time, but thinking back, she had a point, often, we cannot choose the consequences.

How you act has an certainly has an effect on the people around you. Sometimes, we don't even stop to think about it for a moment. Take for example, littering. Every time you decide to casually throw a piece of paper away, you are creating more work for the poor cleaner that is already overwhelmed. Yes, it might be convenient for you, but do spare a thought for others.

Every morning, I make it a point to greet the security guard on the way to school as i walk in the school gates. Being a security guard is not a very glamorous job, and its not pleasant to be treated as being transparent. Try this, do one nice thing a day and see how you can make a difference in the life of others.

After all, its all about making this place we live in a nicer environment.

Welcome to the blogging world

Hey students,

Its time for me to join the blogging world.

I've been resisting this, but i thought, 'what the heck, let's just create a blog and get on with it.' Seems that this is a creative way to hand out assignments... so, let's get on with it.

Hopefully, you'll be able to download resources and test paper answers (eventually) from here.

Don't worry, i'll be posting more stuff here in the days to come...
